Tour Day is devoted to the appreciation of modern architecture in the United States. Events focus on architecture + design of the Modern Movement, and are hosted by Docomomo chapters, partners, + leading voices in preservation. It’s the only national program of its kind. Each year has a different theme and the tour takes place in October.
DOCOMOMO Michigan Tour Day: General Motors Technical Center Tour, Saturday, October 19
Docomomo-MI is very pleased and excited to invite our Michigan members to tour the GM Tech Center, an icon of corporate modernism. For the afternoon tour, we will board a bus at the Cranbrook Art Museum at 1pm for the ride to GM and return by 5pm.
This tour is part of a more expansive day-long reassessment of GM Technical Center’s history and its continued stewardship, entitled General Motors Technical Center at 68: History and Preservation. Organized by the Cranbrook Center for Collections and Research, it includes a panel discussion from 10 am- noon, (lunch on your own) and tours of Eero Saarinen's early work on the Cranbrook campus. If you register for the GM tour, you may attend the morning discussion at Cranbrook for free (a $35 value). If you are only interested in attending the panel discussion, you can purchase a ticket directly from Cranbrook. You can learn more about the full-day details here.
