Federal Mogul Staff Office Building
Southfield | Louis A. Rossetti | Date: 1966
The Federal Mogul building is located in Southfield, Michigan.
Designed by Louis A. Rossetti, construction took place between March 1965 and May 1966, at a cost of approximately $5 million.
The Federal-Mogul building has been renovated and expanded over the years, while managing to retain its characteristic exterior.
Unfortunately, this is soon changing as the structure has been slated for a major overhaul to its design. The building’s current occupants, the Italian-auto parts supplier Marelli— made it known it was planning an extensive renovation— including replacing the distinctive facade of the building.
Joined by Southfield Mayor Ken Siver and members of Southfield’s city council, Docomomo MI board members— including president Ruth Mills & Dale Gyure spoke out against the proposed changes to the building’s exterior. All parties collectively argued to preserve specific distinguished elements of the building. Disappointingly, the company remained unmoved in its decision.
Docomomo US and the Michigan chapter will continue to work with Southfield officials and consider next steps in an effort to preserve elements of this landmark building.
